Designing a Functional Boy’s Bedroom with Built-In Storage – Toronto Renovation

When you’re planning a full home renovation, it’s easy to overlook the kids’ rooms — but they deserve smart design too.

For this Toronto family, we’re creating a custom bedroom design for their son as part of a full gut renovation. The space needs to be calm, organized, and adaptable as he grows.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the design process so far — from moodboards and sketches to a detailed 3D layout and wall prep on site.

The Mood & Materials

1

The overall vibe? Warm, classic, and clean.

We chose a soft yellow paint (“Man on the Moon” by Benjamin Moore) for the built-ins, layered with a timeless blue plaid wallpaper to add subtle pattern and personality. We also introduced warm wood tones and woven rattan sconces to keep the space feeling cozy and calm.

The goal is to balance personality with timelessness — something that works now, and still feels right in a few years.

From Sketch to 3D Design

We always start by mapping out how the space will be used:

  • Storage for clothes, toys, books
  • A desk for homework and reading
  • Closed and open shelving
  • A layout that keeps things feeling open, not cluttered

We sketched the layout and elevation by hand first — keeping the bed, play area, and desk in mind. Then we brought it to life with 3D renderings to show how everything fits, right down to the sconces and shelf heights.

Site Prep is Underway

While we finalize cabinetry details, the site is already prepped. Electrical is roughed in, walls are measured and ready, and the space is mapped exactly to match the design.

This part matters: good design needs good prep. It ensures that the final install is smooth and matches what we planned.

What’s Next

Installation comes next — and we’ll be sharing updates as we bring the built-ins to life. Stay tuned for a full reveal with before-and-after photos.
