Sometimes a space doesn’t need a full renovation to feel new again.

In this North York condo, the dining room already had a built-in sideboard installed along the wall. The cabinetry was still solid and functional, but the dark wood finish made the space feel dated and heavy compared to the rest of the home.

The homeowners liked the storage and the length of the cabinet, but they wanted a brighter, more contemporary look and a more resistant surface on top.

Rather than removing the entire built-in, we focused on updating the finishes and improving the functionality.

The Existing Built-In

The original sideboard was permanently installed and ran along the dining room wall, providing useful storage and a long surface for decor or serving.

However, the dark stain absorbed a lot of light, making the piece visually heavy in the room. Replacing the cabinetry completely would have meant demolition and rebuilding.

Because the structure was still in good condition, we recommended refreshing the cabinet instead of replacing it.

The Design Approach

Our goal was to keep the existing cabinet structure but transform the look so it would feel lighter, cleaner, and more timeless.

The update focused on three key improvements:

• Cabinet painting
• Installing a new quartz countertop
• Replacing the cabinet hardware

For the cabinetry, we selected Sherwin-Williams Ivory Lace, a warm off-white that helps brighten the space while still feeling soft and elegant.

On top, we installed a white quartz countertop, which provides a durable and easy-to-clean surface for everyday use. This also gives the built-in a more refined finish and improves its practicality.

To complete the update, we installed antique brass cabinet knobs, adding warmth and contrast against the painted cabinetry.

The Result

The transformation completely changed the character of the dining room.

The lighter cabinetry now reflects more light, helping the space feel more open and cohesive with the rest of the condo. The quartz countertop adds durability while creating a clean, finished look.

What was once a dark and dated built-in sideboard is now a fresh and functional dining room feature.

Small updates like these can make a significant difference in how a space feels, especially when the existing cabinetry is still well built.
